Federal mandates on fuel could change trucking industry

Created: Thursday, September 15th, 2011 03:01 pm

The recent statements made by President Barack Obama about increased job opportunities made national headlines, but he also addressed several other initiatives during his speech that may affect the future of the trucking industry.

In the past, Obama has urged trucking businesses to make reducing their fuel consumption methods a top priority, since he says that technology is developing more cost-efficient ways to decrease fuel consumption and emissions. Due to the nation's dependence on trucking, the president is supporting necessary adaptations to reduce the damage that diesel-fueled trucks are making to the environment on a global scale.

During his speech, Obama stated that "after more than a decade of research and development, and billions in investments in cleaner fuels, advanced engines and emissions controls, the new generation of diesel technology is now at the forefront of the cleanest and most energy-efficient technologies available."

Both truckers and fleet management owners may need to take into consideration these types of changes soon so that their companies can adhere to rapidly changing fuel regulations.
