Discussions continue over national truck driving hours
In order to maintain the highest level of truck driving safety, the number of hours truckers are permitted to be on the road has been a hot debate as of late. According to the Gaston Gazette, some officials have been lobbying to reduce the permitted number of hours truckers are allowed to haul freight, and increase the hours of time off each driver would accrue. This is being done so truckers can stay alert and ready for any obstacles that may occur while navigating the nation's highways.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is the front-running group that is advocating for these changes.
Those opposed to the laws say trucking companies would lose too much revenue if the hours were reduced. Truckers may also suffer, as they may not be able to earn the same wages previously received if these businesses need to cut corners. With a driver shortage already in place nationwide, changing the rules may decrease these numbers even further.
Seasoned veterans or truckers who have recently completed their CDL training should keep up to date on these types of debates happening in the trucking industry, for they could greatly influence their future careers.
