Department of Transportation releases new plans for trucking safety regulations
In recent months, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has placed an increased emphasis on truck driving safety. In fact, many policies that are related to this topic are expected to be established in the near future.
Safety regulations for truckers who cross international borders are one of the DOT's most recent areas of focus. Earlier this week, the Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood revealed a preliminary plan for a new set of rules for drivers who travel to Mexico.
Speaking to Congress and the Mexican Government, LaHood outlined a program that is intended to help the U.S. meet its shipping needs while maintaining the safety of drivers who cross the Mexican border.
According to Reuters, the DOT is seeking to remove roadblocks that were created by safety and labor groups so that long-haul truckers can safely and efficiently carry loads to and from Mexico.
Safety directors whose operators work outside domestic borders may want to consider enrolling their fleets in online truck driver safety training courses. These classes could help preserve the safety and compliance of these professionals.
