DOT announces new trucking safety rules

Created: Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 08:01 am

Fleet management officials may want to consider enrolling their employees in recurrent hazmat training courses, as this sector of the transportation industry has recently undergone some changes.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) recently announced that a series of hazmat transportation permits have been converted into federal regulations.

These permits, which have been in place for several years, have established their ability to promote safety in the industry. As a result, PHMSA decided that their safety records were strong enough to establish them as hard-and-fast rules.

Officials added that this move will reduce the number of applications for permits that are submitted to this department each year.

"Getting rid of this cumbersome process will maintain safety, and save businesses and the government both time and money," said Ray LaHood, U.S. Transportation Secretary.

Transportation professionals who enroll in truck driver safety training courses may be able to stay abreast of emerging changes in their industry. Gaining such knowledge could save these workers a great deal of time.
