Congress explores bill on safe parking for truckers

Trucking safety is a high priority for most companies. The health of the driver is paramount to the business' bottom line.

As such, Congress is continuing to explore the importance of providing truck drivers with safe parking options while they are out on the road. This proposal comes after the tragic death of one man who was shot and killed in his rig. He was early for a delivery and was forced to find a place to park.

"We must ensure that our drivers have safe rest areas with parking for commercial motor vehicles; parking facilities next to truck stops and travel plazas; and new facilities for parking, including weigh and inspection stations," U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-NY, told the news source.

Enrolling operators in online truck driver training courses can help new and experienced professionals learn the best ways to plan their route and deliveries to avoid unnecessary downtime.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 8,000 new job opportunities are projected to be available for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers.
