Bill proposed to thwart toll hikes on a federal level

Toll hikes throughout the country can greatly affect the livelihood of truckers, no matter where they work. According to Trucking Info, some advocacy groups are working towards improving these situations in their states by allowing the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to step in when an increase in fares seems unjust.

The federal government has not been able to have a say is state-to-state toll increases since the late 1980s. However, Senator Frank Lautenberg and Representative Michael Grimm have proposed a bill to put the DOT back in power over these fees.

This idea came to be over the recent increases throughout New York and New Jersey, which is greatly affecting the trucking industry.

“There’s a clear need for federal oversight here to make sure toll revenue is being used appropriately and not going to fund excessive salaries or political patronage jobs," Senator Lautenberg said in a statement, according to Fleet Owner.

Truckers who have recently completed their CDL training and are concerned about law changes like these may contact their local trucking organization or government officials for more information.
