Assemblyman Barclay against proposed toll increases in New York

Created: Wednesday, August 8th, 2012 11:01 am

The New York State Thruway Authority proposed a 45 percent increase in toll prices, which will take effect in October if the plan is implemented.

Though many believe the toll increase will generate revenue for the state, Assemblyman Will Barclay has recently come out and said he opposes the plan.

“This latest proposed toll increase is poorly conceived,” Barclay said. “At a time when our economy is teetering on a recovery and many communities have been deeply affected by unemployment, adding to the cost of doing business in this state is a bad idea.”

Barclay has opposed toll increases in the past, citing that the hike makes New York highways a less desirable travel option for both truckers and leisure travelers.

Whether or not the toll increase will hurt the New York economy and deter truckers from traveling through the state has been called into question, as the price for a commercial truck to travel between Albany and Buffalo will increase from $61.89 to $89.73, according to Oswego County Today.

New York law mandates that the Thruway Authority needs to hold public meetings when a toll increase is proposed. A hearing will be held on August 17, 2012, in Syracuse, New York, to discuss the issue.
