Young women looking towards trucking careers

Women are trucking right alongside men on the highways, hauling freight for various companies across the nation. According to the Andalusia Star News, experts in trucking recently spoke to some female students about the benefits of a career on the road.

Starting salaries for truckers who complete 2,000 miles a week is roughly $30,000, with opportunities to earn more through additional miles traveled. This field may be challenging, as truckers must face being away from home for long stretches of time. However, young people may be well suited for this type of work when they have fewer family obligations in the beginning of their careers.

According to the 2010 data compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 5 percent of truck drivers in the past year were women. About 7 percent of all individuals operating industrial tractors and trucks are women as well. Overall, about 13 percent of truckers are women involved in this industry, which shows that women are prevalent in this non-traditional field of work.

Women who may be interested in this field can join this lucrative trade by taking some CDL training coursework to help boost their credibility for future trucking occupations.
