Turnover rate for truck drivers remains high

Although trucking job opportunities are on the rise despite economic unrest, many of these jobs are the result of an elevated turnover rate throughout the industry. Recent data released by the American Trucking Association's (ATA) Trucking Activity Report found that during this most recent quarter, turnover is at the highest in three years.

In the past year, the rising rates have been a growing concern among officials in the industry. The turnover for drivers on the road was at 79 percent last quarter, an increase of four percentage points since the previous data was collected.

"Even though the increase was small, we still believe the market for quality drivers is getting extremely tight and fleets are aggressively recruiting to fill their openings," Bob Costell, chief economist for the ATA, said in a statement.

This data may encourage truckers to fully research what companies they commit to working for after their CDL training. If truckers find satisfying positions with their trucking business, it may help decrease these numbers in the future.

Fleet management owners may want to double-check the credentials and reliability of drivers they employ to ensure that their individual business' turnover rate is kept to a minimum, which may help the overall success rate of the company.
