Trucking summer outlook positive

The Pulse of Commerce Index calculated by Ceridian and the University of California, Los Angeles, increased 1.5 percent year-over-year in May. The index measures fuel consumed by the trucking industry, marking a 5.2 percent increase from April, suggesting strong growth in fleet management and trucking company business.

The monthly freight shipment index from Cass Information Systems reported a 2.2 percent year-over-year increase in May, up from 1.8 percent in April, marking the index's best performance since February. The Cass freight expenditure index increased 5.6 percent year-over-year, despite high numbers in May 2011 as well. Price strength jumped 2.2 percent from April, with the trucking industry ranking No. 80 on the IBD, a 26 percent increase from the second quarter of 2012.

Demonstrating success in the trucking industry, Celadon Trucking Services recently purchased a portion of the operating equipment of Hiner Transport. Celadon hopes the acquisition will increase its marketshare in the transportation industry, as Hiner has a loyal consumer base of companies and drivers. Celadon believes its updated equipment fleet, additional capacity, leading-edge technology and outstanding safety record will enhance the customer service for Hiner's former customers once the acquisition is complete.
