Trucking jobs on the rise

Created: Friday, January 6th, 2012 04:01 pm

Recent figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed the for-hire trucking industry added 5,100 new payroll employees in December, which was the most employees added in one month since March.

This number is encouraging, and it does not include the trucking-related jobs in other industries, including truck drivers for private fleets, which means even more truckers gained employment in December.

These numbers show promise for those who are looking to enter the trucking field, meaning there will likely be more prospective truckers seeking online CDL training.

In comparison to December 2010, trucking employment is up 40,100 jobs, while payroll employment has added 68,800 jobs since trucking jobs bottomed out in March 2010.

According to WBIR, the NBC affiliate in Knoxville, Tennessee, several companies in the area are looking to employ more truck drivers, which is bringing in people from other lines of work.

"The average truck driver today is 50 years old, so you have a lot of drivers that are retiring out of the industry," Barry Henson, a trucking industry professional, told the news source. "We need to keep feeding the industry to cover up for their retirement."
