Trucking industry experiences huge employment increases in February and March

Employment in the trucking industry has taken a hit due to recent rise in fuel prices and the general cost of shipping freight has many companies laying off workers to remain afloat. However, the economy added nearly 216,000 last month, according to The Associated Press.

Officials told the news source that the unemployment rate fell to a two-year low of 8.8 percent in March, which is part of the strongest two months of hiring since the economic downturn began. For example, trucking picked up 1,600 jobs for the month after the industry swelled by more than 11,200 new jobs in February.

As such, it is becoming increasingly important for drivers to enroll in CDL training in order to gain the necessary knowledge in trucking industry compliance standards. Earning this license may give new drivers a leg up on the competition and lead to more employment opportunities.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for transportation and material moving occupations are expected to increase by 13 percent in the coming years. More 8,000 new opportunities are projected to be available for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers.
