Trucking hour limits could affect future food costs

If the law is passed for reducing the number of hours truckers are allowed on the road, it may affect more than just the driver’s livelihood and profits for owner-operators. According to BusinessWeek, the general public nationwide may experience a hike in costs for daily necessities, since trucking companies will most likely have to tighten their belts.

Industries like food, refrigerated goods and produce may rise if grocery stores have to pay more in shipping costs. This could affect those looking for jobs in trucking after completing their CDL training, because if individuals do not buy high-priced goods, jobs may offer fewer benefits.

However, some still say these regulations are essential to the trucking industry. Several government officials think safety should always be number one, even if new rules pose challenges and issues for truckers and customers, reports The Washington Times.

"We have to make sure that we don’t start to ignore the human dimension,” Ohio Representative Dennis J. Kucinich, told the news source. “The only question that matters is whether the proposed rule will ensure that all of our loved ones will be safe on the road."
