Truckers traveling through Washington state being inspected for dangerous violations

Created: Thursday, June 9th, 2011 05:01 pm

Washington state officials are closely watching truckers to make sure they maintain regulations, which will keep all drivers safe on the road, reports KAPP TV in Washington.

Local law enforcement are stationed at highway weigh stations. Not only are freights checked, the trucks themselves are given a once-over for any issues, such as headlights, tires or emissions.

Commercial vehicle inspector Keith Qunell tests trucks on a daily basis, which can sometimes take up to 45 minutes to complete a thorough check. Qunell says this job is essential to prevent harmful accidents that could occur without inspections.

“If we didn't have commercial vehicle enforcement across the country, we'd have some pretty serious trucks running around causing a lot of deaths,” he told the news source.

Olympia police officers are taking part in Roadcheck 2011, the official nationwide event that stresses importance of trucking safety, reports The Seattle Times. They will be on call 24 hours a day for a weekend in June, to man the weigh stations and check logbooks of passing truckers.
