Truckers cut corners despite monitoring technology

The majority of drivers do their best to ensure trucking safety by staying within regulations of speed and time while on the clock. However, some truckers will cut corners to arrive at their destinations faster. Fleet management owners are guilty of cutting corners as well, by rigging the government-issued speed monitors to accommodate higher limits, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Due to modern technology, truckers are having a more difficult time skirting the law. Companies were not keen to check gas mileage rates as strictly because fuel prices were not as staggering. CB radios aided truck drivers in swapping warnings over speed traps and the locations of law enforcement.

Now, truckers and owners are manipulating the machines themselves to trick regulators. However, overall, the well-being of drivers has increased, because the technology helps them become more aware of the risks.

John Gilbert, a trucker for more than four decades, says he's happy about the supervision.

"Some of the stuff I did when I was younger scares me," he told the news source.

According to Government PR News, The National Highway Traffic Safety Department is the program that is in charge of speed regulation for all national commercial trucks.
