Truckers, who are often tasked with handling hazardous conditions along the nation's highways, take on the important responsibility of keeping themselves and other motorists protected. A truck driver in Washington state was recently recognized for his efforts in adhering to trucking safety while on the job, Highline Times reports.
Kurt Coulson of Conway Freight received the Washington Trucking Associations' (WTA) 2011 Driver of the Year Award after being nominated by his employer. Several factors are considered when determining a winner for this honor, including miles driven without accidents, community involvement and years of experience.
Coulson has been driving trucks for 27 years and has covered more than 1.7 million miles of road during his tenure. He says he credits his success to keeping good music on the radio and being cautious while driving, even under deadlines, reports the news source.
According to the organization's website, the WTA was established to support the trucking industry by offering resources for truckers and fleet management owners to learn about compliance training for truck drivers, new regulations and other facets of commercial trucking careers within the state of Washington.
