Truck registration sees increase in 2010

Created: Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 03:01 pm

According to Polk Automotive Information and Marketing Solutions, truck registrations are up and used truck registrations hit a new record high, Trucking Info reports.

Researchers found that 367,377 new vehicles in classes 3-8 vehicles were registered during 2010, which represents a 12.2 percent increase over 2009 numbers. They added that this level of activity still translates into 50 percent fewer registrations than 2006 figures, which was the peak year.

"The significant increase in used vehicle registrations during the 2010 calendar year is indicative of a strengthening in the demand for commercial vehicles overall," Gary Meteer, director of sales and client services at Polk, told the news source.

Researchers found that approximately 672,000 used Class 3-8 units were registered, which is a 21.7 percent increase over 2009 numbers. Furthermore, used registration accounted for an estimated 65 percent of total commercial vehicles in 2010.

Safety directors may want to enroll their new employees in online truck driver training courses. These programs can help operators stay up-to-date with industry trends.

According to the study, nearly 27 percent of all vehicles registered were lighter types, which represent the largest increase in the industry.
