Truck driver demand on the upswing

Created: Monday, August 1st, 2011 05:01 pm

Although the United States is facing uncertain economic times, the trucking industry continues to thrive. As a result, this job field has more fleet management opportunities for short and long-distance hauls, reports the Oxford Press in Ohio.

Experienced drivers are on the verge on retiring, and the unique lifestyle of odd hours on the road may not be tempting as many new drivers as before.

Ken Henderson, president of JP Transport in Middleton, Ohio, told the media outlet that the industry is in trouble if younger drivers do not apply for future vacant positions.

"The average driver is 51 years old, but we’re not getting people to replace them," he told the news source.

Individuals considering freight hauling as a career may want to take online truck driver training courses, which can certify them for jobs as licensed big rig driver{s}.

According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job opportunities are plentiful in the trucking industry. In 2008, there were more than 2 million jobs in transportation and warehousing across the country. In addition, the agency predicts an estimated 11 percent growth in the number of positions available by 2018.
