Texas seeks to lower tolls for truck drivers

In an effort to increase revenue, many states are beginning to lower tolls for truckers to attract more companies into using certain highways. This measure also entices drivers to take these highways because it could be a shorter route to their destination. However, many companies still bypass these roads because the price is still too high to justify.

For instance, Texas lawmakers are proposing to lower the toll on State Highway 130 for truck drivers, news station KVUE reports.

Officials told the news source that when the highway was opened(comma) it was supposed to help ease congestion on interstate 35 through Austin by diverting traffic around the city. However, many trucking companies stayed away because it was too expensive.

Texas Department of Transportation officials told the news source that they will be offering a new incentive for trucks traveling on State Highways 130 and 45 by dropping the toll by nearly 25 percent. Currently, the cost of a one-way trip ranges between $16 and $27.

Companies can enroll their drivers in online truck safety training courses to teach them the most cost-effective routes through major cities. Similar efforts may lead to fewer expenses and better trucking safety.
