Scholarship program helps veterans break into the trucking industry
A transportation company recently announced its plan to create a scholarship opportunity for 1,000 veterans, which will make it easier for them to receive the necessary CDL training to become a certified member of the trucking industry.
"Veterans are used to working in teams and with a high degree of trust for each other," said Scott Barker, vice president of safety, recruiting and driver development for the trucking company. "They are also used to adapting to change and treating each other with respect."
For veterans, the program includes a full scholarship with a one-year commitment to the transportation company. A $1,000 tuition discount is being offered to Selective Reserves and National Guard with a one-year commitment. Once the drivers become certified, the transportation company plans to assign these veterans to regional driving positions.
Efforts like these allow veterans to get back into the workforce after returning home from their stints in the military, which is especially important for younger veterans, according to MSNBC.
The news source said many younger veterans often have trouble rejoining the workforce because they have less experience than their competitors in the industries they are trying to break into.
