Scholarship program assists truckers in need

Even when truckers decide to retire from the industry, they are not forgotten for their dedication to the challenging career path. Recently, the St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund was announced, and will be available for drivers who may have left their big rigs due to medical conditions, reports Fleet Owner.

The scholarship was made possible by a $100,000 donation from the National Association for Independent Truckers (NAIT), part of which will go towards the program. Award money is meant to assist truckers who have to return to school or spend time searching for a new job, as they can no longer navigate the nation’s highways.

According to the St, Christopher website, this organization has helped truckers across the country since 2007. XM Radio host Dave Nemo created the idea after hearing stories about ill and injured truckers who were struggling to get back on their feet when they could no longer drive. More than 400 truckers and their families have been assisted by this effort, and the non profit continues to expand.

As new drivers are entering the trucking workforce every day after completing their CDL training, many more are unable to continue and require some assistance to sustain themselves. This program helps them and illustrates the level of camaraderie within the trucking industry.
