SETA proposal may create need for tanker trailers, if passed

A recent proposal is up before Congress that may increase the weight limit for trucks on interstate highways. Trucking experts say that if it passes, orders for tanker trailers may skyrocket, Fleet Owner reports.

The Safe and Efficient Transportation Act was introduced in the House in February, which would give states the option of raising its interstate weight limit for trucks equipped with an extra axle to a maximum of 97,000 pounds. Experts say that new orders could jump as much as 35 percent this year, if the proposal is passed.

"Every other [industrialized] country allows 100,000 pound [trailers], and by allowing trucks carry heavier loads, there would be fewer trucks on the road – a benefit to shippers, the environment and the motorist public alike," Ted Fick, president and chief executive of operations of Polar Corp., told the news source.

These proposed changes demonstrate the need for safety directors to enroll their drivers in online truck driver training courses to help them learn the best ways to operator of heavier vehicles as well as stay current on industry trends.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 8,000 new job opportunities are projected to be available for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers.
