Road trains could improve trucking safety

During the winter months, cold temperatures and unpredictable weather has many companies focusing on truck driving safety. In fact, some members of this industry are currently researching innovative methods to ensure that professionals in this field are better protected while they are on duty.

For instance, the Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE) recently completed its first demonstration of vehicle platooning technology.

This system involves the use of a professional driver who is tasked with operating a lead vehicle. Behind this individual is a line of other trucks, which are equipped to measure the direction, distance and speed of the leader. Although the automobiles are detached from one another and may operate independently at any time, the entire platoon is controlled by the main car.

Consequently, drivers who are in these processions are able to do other things on the way to their destinations, as their hands and feet are free throughout the trip.

Officials from SARTRE say that this technology - which could go mainstream within the next decade - could improve trucking safety and reduce vehicle emissions. In the meantime, professionals in this field may want to ensure their well-being on the road by completing compliance training for truck drivers.
