Research shows that demand for heavy trucks is increasing

Created: Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 03:01 pm

Recent studies from ACT Research Co. and FTR Associates show that heavy-duty Class 8 commercial vehicles orders continued to be strong in February, The Trucker reports.

Researchers found that more than 49,000 of these vehicles were ordered in February, which could mean the industry is gaining traction on the employment front.

"The industry is continuing in 2011 where it left off in 2010," Steve Tam, vice president commercial vehicle sector, told the news source. "The strength in orders continues to restock industry backlogs and fuel increasing build as the industry moves through the year."

Many companies are seeking ways to reduce costs and feature vehicles with better fuel economy as part of the increased gas prices

As a result, safety directors may wish to enroll their new employees in online truck driver training courses. These programs can help operators learn the nuances of new vehicles as well as changes in the industry.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, nearly 20 percent of vehicles in 2010 were rendered out-of-service after a roadside inspection, which could include trucks that are deemed unsafe and need replacing.
