Proposed bill could accelerate truck driving jobs for veterans

Created: Wednesday, February 15th, 2012 03:01 pm

U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, a Republican, and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, a Democrat, recently introduced a bill that would speed up the process for veterans to receive the proper CDL training to become a truck driver.

The bill asks the Secretary of Transportation and the Secretary of Defense to work on ways that would allow veterans to quickly obtain a commercial driver's license by translating the skills they used in combat, such as driving a tank or Humvee.

"Helping our veterans turn the skills they learned in the military into good-paying jobs not only honors our promise to support those who have sacrificed for our nation - it also helps strengthen our nation," said Klobuchar. "It was great to work with Senator Snowe on this legislation to help reduce barriers for qualified veterans to get their commercial driving licenses so they can get on the road and get good jobs."

According to the Jackson Clarion Ledger, a news source covering Jackson, Mississippi, the current job market is tough for many veterans returning home from war. Still, the jobless rate among veterans fell from 15.2 percent in January 2011 to 9.1 percent last month.
