Produce Transportation Working Group gives truckers new regulations

Created: Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 04:01 pm

The North American Produce Transportation Working Group recently released its new North American Produce Transportation Guidelines, which give truckers better guidance on how to travel with fresh produce.

Making sure truckers have the appropriate CDL training is one way to ensure produce will be transported in the correct manner. The produce industry is important for truckers, which underscores why truckers should look to live by these new regulations.

“Transportation carriers are facing increasing costs and complexities today,” said David Owen, president of the National Association of Small Trucking Companies. “If we don’t all play our part in assisting carriers and making produce a desirable industry to do business in, we could face shortages of carriers in the future."

Following NAPTWG best practices, such as those regarding maintaining and recording trailer temperatures, is one way the trucking industry can assure growers and distributors their produce will be shipped in the right manner.

Sarene Marshall, the managing director for The Nature Conservancy, wrote in blog post for Care2.com that fresh produce in the winter provides a number of benefits to people.
