Potential truck drivers looking for exemptions for their hearing disabilities

Created: Friday, October 14th, 2011 04:01 pm

The world of trucking may soon be welcoming a new kind of driver to their fleets. Recently, more than 20 individuals across the country have asked the Department of Transportation (DOT) for a special pardon so they may apply for CDL training, even though they are deaf, reports Trucking Info.

Deaf and hard of hearing applicants submitted their requests over the summer and are awaiting the DOT decision for their appeal. If approved, these potential truckers could receive their CDL A or B permits and join other truckers who are currently navigating the nation’s highways.

According to the National Association of the Deaf’s website, this organization has been in support of this initiative and offers encouragement and information to those who have hearing problems and wish to become truck drivers. This is the first time the DOT has taken into consideration these types of request from the deaf community to obtain CDL licenses.

Individuals who think they may not qualify for a trucking job can research the DOT regulations, for there may still be a way to obtain one’s licenses even if they have a disability.
