Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to require RFID tags on trucks
The Ports of New York and New Jersey will be required to use Radio Frequency Identification technology within the next year to help the Port Authority reach 100 percent compliance in the Truck Replacement Program.
“As an important component of the Clean Air Strategy for the Port of New York and New Jersey, the TRP aims to replace trucks that have engines Model Year 2003 or older with newer trucks equipped with Model Year 2004 or newer EPA emissions-compliant engines,” the Port Authority website explained. “The purpose of the TRP is to reduce diesel emissions from older trucks and improve local and regional air quality while also improving public health.”
Using RFID technology will allow authorities to ensure participation in the program, as the method will work better than the random Port Authority Police Department checks at exit terminal facilities that are currently taking place.
The agency expects the online system to be ready by the second quarter of 2013, at which time all trucks planning to access the port will need to install RFID tags on their vehicles.
Although the system will be an important factor in helping the environment, it requires no compliance training for truck drivers to work properly.
