Commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) can help open careers tracks for many individuals who drive heavy trucks for companies. However, the Pompton Lakes Borough Department of Public Works (DPW) recently announced that employees who obtain a CDL will receive a pay raise, The Record reports.

Individuals can obtain this license by enrolling in online CDL training, which will net this town's DPW employees $5,000 more per year.

A recent meeting between the Borough Administrator and the Pompton Lakes Borough Employee Association helped reopen a proposal for salary restructuring.

Officials told the news source that the funds came from a $15,000 salary set aside for a part-time employee. However, money was reallocated to paying full-time workers who obtained the license.

"I certainly fully support it," Lloyd Kent, city councilman, told the news source "This is really a big plus for us to be able to do this and I think that we are going to get the drivers that we need."

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, a CDL license is required to operate any type of vehicle over 26,001 pounds or more for commercial use.
