Oil and gas drilling creating trucking jobs in Ohio

Created: Monday, April 16th, 2012 04:01 pm

With Ohio experiencing an oil and gas boom, the number of truckers needed in the state has begun to drastically increase, reported the Zanesville Times-Recorder.

The newspaper said drivers with the necessary CDL training can find trucking jobs in the state, particularly in the Utica Shale region, and drilling in the state isn't supposed to cease any time soon. A recent study from the Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program suggested as many as 200,000 jobs could be created as a result of development in the area.

"When we did the study, the average salary of skilled laborers (like truckers) was $55,000 a year," Rhonda Reda, executive director of OOGEEP, told the news source. "These are good-paying wages. That would depend on experience. These jobs include benefits, too."

The OOGEEP was created to promote a positive image of oil and gas development in the state, said the news source.

While gas and oil is adding trucking jobs to the workforce in Ohio, Kansas-based shipping company YRC Freight is planning to cut 126 jobs at a terminal facility in Ohio, reported the Dayton Business Journal.

According to the newspaper, the workers affected by the jobs cuts include 64 drivers, 33 dock workers, 18 mechanics and six switchers.
