New legislature in Mississippi helps veterans become truckers

Some governmental officials are looking out for unemployed veterans by offering them opportunities to enter the trucking industry. Recently, the Wicker Amendment was passed to assist in streamlining the process for veterans to complete their CDL training and earn their certifications.

The initiative was sponsored by U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, a republican from Mississippi. He said that veterans do not need all the red tape coming between them and potential trucking jobs.

"Veterans face a daunting number of regulations when applying for a commercial driver’s license even if they learned to operate a truck in a war zone," Senator Wicker said in a statement."Those who served our nation deserve our full support as they seek jobs back home."

Also supporting the new bill is the Mississippi Trucking Association, which hopes that this program will put more qualified veterans behind the wheel of commercial big rigs. With the industry in need of more drivers than ever, other states may follow suit in opening up the possibility of veterans working on their compliance training for truck drivers and quickly obtaining successful jobs on the road.
