New bill may help reduce America's dependency on foreign oil

Recent civil unrest in North Africa has increased the price of diesel. As a result, the trucking industry and Congress are exploring alternative methods to help reduce the dependency companies have on foreign supply.

The Natural Gas Act was recently introduced by Congress in an effort to reduce the cost of fuel for trucking companies. The legislation will focus on utilizing America's own rich resource of natural gas.

"The nuclear crisis in Japan has already triggered a renewed interest and appreciation for natural gas in this country," said Jeffrey Mayer, president and chief executive officer of MXenergy. "The Natural Gas Act is an opportunity for the United States to make an important shift in its energy policy and consumption."

The U.S. currently imports nearly 70 percent of crude oil, which will send approximately $10 trillion over the next ten years overseas. However, the plan, which was introduced by billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens would expand the use of natural gas for America's heavy-duty truck fleets. He spent more than $80 million to promote this plan.
