National Truck Driving Championship showcases driver talent
To handle a giant big rig on the nation's highways, drivers need to have certain skills to ensure trucking safety while on the job. In August, those in the industry will have the chance to demonstrate their abilities and compete for prizes at the National Truck Driving Championships, sponsored by the American Trucking Association (ATA).
Held in Orlando, Florida, more than 450 contestants complete various tasks, including a driving portion and a written exam, to show judges their individual and team capabilities. Drivers will all be vying for the National Grand Champion title, as well as separate awards in nine categories of vehicles.
The FedEx Corporation is entering 115 drivers into the event, representing 45 states in the country. At least 60 of them have been navigating their trucks for more than 20 years, and the drivers collectively have clocked about 2,200 years of professional time on the road.
Frederick W. Smith, president and CEO of the nationwide company, looks forward to the competition and holds his fleet in high regard.
"At FedEx, safety is a top priority in every aspect of our business," he said.
