NTSB to hold an attentive driver forum
Placing an emphasis on truck driving safety, the National Transportation Safety Board recently announced it plans to hold a forum on March 27 discussing the importance of attentive driving.
The Attentive Driving: Countermeasures for Distraction forum will be held in Washington, D.C., at the NTSB Board Room and Conference Center, and is expected to cover issues such as potential distractions while driving, distracted driver laws and certain state regulations governing driver attention. The NTSB will also use the forum to discuss the Visual-Manual Driver Distraction Guidelines that it recently created.
"In generations past the norm was an attentive driver with occasional distractions, but today distractions are competing full-time for the driver's attention," said Chairman Deborah Hersman. "Our forum will identify how distractions affect behavior behind the wheel and focus on measures that promote attentive driving."
According to a recent Reuters report, the NTSB guidelines are designed with younger drivers in mind, given that these are the drivers most likely to be heavy users of wireless technology that can cause distractions when they are behind the wheel.
