Kansas develops new permit system to promote trucking safety

Created: Wednesday, March 9th, 2011 05:01 am

The Kansas Departments of Transportation (KDOT) and Revenue recently teamed up with the state's Highway Patrol to create the Kansas Trucking Routing and Intelligent Permitting System, news station KWCH reports.

Officials told the news source that the new system will help streamline the permit process for freight companies that haul large loads. Many businesses feel that this may improve trucking safety and the economy.

The system will assist in cutting down operating costs and provide easier and more efficient methods for routing oversize and overweight loads. Currently, Kansas issues more than 70,000 permits annually, but the demand is increasing in high-growth areas.

"Routing oversize and overweight loads is complex, time-sensitive and requires cooperation among multiple partners," Jim Kowach, KDOT Bureau chief of design, told the news source. "Accurate routing plays a key role in safety, reducing congestion, expanding economic opportunity and preserving our highways."

Safety directors may be interested in enrolling their employees in truck driver safety training courses to give their operators information on the best and most efficient routes to take.
