Index shows trucking conditions improved in November

Created: Friday, January 6th, 2012 12:01 pm

According to the latest Trucking Conditions Index compiled by FTR Consulting, truck conditions improved to 5.2 in November, which means trucking conditions have been in positive territory for more than a year.

These results show that truck driving safety has been improving for a number of months, and the overall environment for truckers has also experienced growth, including capacity and pricing conditions.

"The conditions for the trucking industry will now turn on the fundamentals of supply and demand, as well as the continuing effects of existing new safety regulations such as CSA," said Larry Gross, senior consultant for FTR. "We expect these factors combined will work to keep trucking capacity modestly tight over the course of the year, enabling continued progress on trucking rates for carriers."

Another recent measure to ensure the safety of truckers came from the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee, which has recommended screening for sleep apnea in obese truck drivers, reported the Huffington Post.

Those with a body mass index of 35 or over would subject to the screening. According to Trucker News, a 6-foot-tall driver who weighs 258 pounds has a BMI of 35.
