Finger Lakes region will hold random inspection on state routes
In an effort to better trucking safety as well as help motorists feel secure while driving on rural roads, a task force in the Finger Lakes region of New York seek to enforce strict regulations on state routes, Auburn Citizen reports.
With assistance from the state Department of Transportation (DOT), the task force - which is made up of public officials from area villages - are currently identifying locations for inspection sites. The proposal will hold random roadside compliance reviews to help control truck traffic that may be unsafe and harmful to the quality of life of the general public.
Officials told the news source that the effort would involve state and local resources, with DOT representatives on location to carry out the roadside inspection and law enforcement to escort vehicles to the inspection sites and write tickets.
Online truck driving regulation training may help new and experienced drivers learn which routes are legal to use for hauling freight. These classes also promote trucking safety.
According to the FMCSA, more than 3 million roadside inspections and 6,000 compliance reviews were conducted by state authorities in 2010.
