Farmers discuss trucking impact on their businesses

The trucking industry is often connected to other forms of commerce, due to their abilities to haul freight for various companies around the country. Agriculture, for example, depends largely on how drivers can transport their livestock and produce quickly and efficiently. Recently, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) had discussions on the impact of trucking regulations to local farmers, reports the Pratt Tribune.

Not only do truckers who are involved in agriculture bring wares to distributors, they also play a role in the transport of goods on the farms. Independent farm owners are concerned they may be restricted if proposed federal bills are passed.

Senator Pat Roberts is aiding farmers by being an advocate for their special trucking needs. He requested additional time from the FMCSA to formulate a beneficial plan.

Steve Baccus, a Kansas grain farmer, says he is educating the FMCSA on why farmers should not fall under the trucking category when moving material in their fields, reports the Kansas AG Connection.

"We're eager to help Washington-based regulators understand that a farm truck is not an over-the-road motor carrier," Baccus told the news source. "Senator Pat Roberts clearly understands the distinction and we're grateful for his leadership in helping convince others."
