E-hauling permits now available in Maryland

The Maryland State Highway Administration will now allow truck drivers to display electronic hauling permits during inspections, replacing traditional paper permits, Fleet Owner reported.

The new technology makes Maryland the second state in the country, and the first on the eastern seaboard, to issue the trucking industry with electronic permits. The decision came when authorities realized that requiring state-issued paper permits can be extremely inconvenient for the drivers who usually do not have the means to print paper copies while on the road.

“Maryland maintains a good working relationship with the trucking community, and this partnership keeps our state’s roadways safer places to travel,” said Captain Norman Dofflemyer, Maryland State Police Commander of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. “By minimizing burdens and simplifying processes, we build trust with haulers that in turn leads to improved compliance."

Maryland authorities will be able to access the Automated Hauling Permit Systems and validate the information about travel times and logbooks reported by the driver.

The use of e-permits is not mandatory, and drivers may choose to continue using printed copies of permits.
