Economy forces many to receive CDL training to find jobs
Two baby boomers in Ohio, David McCarty and Deane Kennedy, are a just a few of the generation who have been pushed to gain new skills as a result of the difficult job market, reported the Dayton Daily News.
"It was almost comical the jobs I got turned away from," McCarty told the paper. "I couldn't even get a job as a telecommunications service rep with Cincinnati Bell. People just said you're overqualified. You do what you have to to get by each day, then you can begin recovering."
The news source said McCarty was tired of getting turned down from jobs, so he finally followed up on drivers wanted signs that he had constantly been seeing on commercial vehicles. McCarty attended a local truck driver-training school and got the necessary CDL training to become a driver. Now he is thankful to be at the helm of an 18-wheeler.
Another result of the need for truck drivers across the nation has forced Swift Transportation to look for ways to recruit and retain workers, which the company sees as a major problem in the upcoming year, reported Bloomberg.
