Economy a driving force in the trucking industry

According to Minneapolis CBS affiliate WCCO, the economy is compelling many more people to enter the relatively healthy trucking industry from other construction jobs, making CDL training even more important across the United States.

"The economy is driving our students to us," Darrell Peterson, representative of a St. Paul area truck driving school, told the news source. "There’s no doubt about it. We’ve got mortgage brokers, realtors, HVAC people and electricians. Just people from the construction trades in general that are looking for a place to go."

Peterson said his school is having its best year in recent memory, providing training to middle-aged Americans are seeking the $45,000-$50,000 starting salary given to truckers, reported the source.

Many believe that truck driving is thought of as a "macho" profession, but people are slowly learning that it is more finesse than anything, Peterson told the news source.

Trucking jobs are becoming readily available in Arizona, prompting Arizona State Senator Al Melvin to Tweet that these jobs can be filled by earning a commercial driver's license in three weeks, reported The Arizona Republic.
