Driver safety an important focus as the trucking industry grows

Due to the economic downturn, the truck transportation field has slowed greatly over the past few years. However, analysts are predicting that this trend will be reversed as the country's financial situation begins to improve.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that the busy 2010 holiday season could be an indicator of a prosperous future for this industry. Experts anticipate that business could improve by 3 to 5 percent this year.

However, trucking companies still have a few obstacles to overcome before they can return to pre-recession levels of success and comfort. Many of them will feel pressure to increase drivers' wages in order to attract new employees, and the cost of tractors is slated to go up.

Shortages of operators could become a problem as well if some proposed regulations from the Department of Transportation (DOT) are enacted. The suggested rules, which are designed to promote health and safety, would reduce the maximum amount of hours each driver is allowed to work each day.

Safety directors who wish to thrive as the economy begins to recover may want to ensure that their fleets are up-to-speed on the latest safety regulations. Online driver training courses may enable these individuals to learn about changes to their industry without interrupting their schedules.
