Discussions over toll hikes in New York continue

Truckers who use the highways to get in and out of Staten Island, New York may see an increase in toll fares soon unless advocates against the hikes are successful in stopping it. According to The Staten Island Advance, truckers, businesses and regular motorists are all suffering from the already high toll rates and many feel that they should not go up any higher.

Some feel so strongly about this issue that they have begun protesting the fares near construction companies and other hotspots throughout the region. In attendance were several fleet management owners and truckers who are worried that higher tolls could cost them thousands of dollars extra each year.

“It’s no good when truckers are getting pounded," Taknocca Ashe, a New Jersey resident who was at the rallies, told the news source. "They’re going to run the businesses off of Staten Island."

There is also a petition that encourages officials to take a closer look at the heightened tolls, reports New York 1 News. Hundreds have signed it, many in the trucking industry, in hopes that some fares will be decreased.
