Diesel prices continue its upward trend

Created: Tuesday, March 29th, 2011 05:01 pm

Gas prices recently fluctuated dramatically due to unrest in Northern Africa. After a brief reprise, the price of on-highway diesel is increasing again, Trucking Info reports.

According to the Department of Energy, the price of U.S. on-highway diesel is up 2.5 cents from last week and almost a full dollar from last year. This comes after the cost of fuel decreased slightly last week, which broke a string of increases for 15 straight weeks.

Moreover, some regions were hit harder than others. For example, the West Coast experienced the biggest jump, recording a more than 5 cent increase to $4.15 per gallon. Meanwhile, the East Coast's costs rose $0.01 to $3.95.

Experts indicate that prices may begin to decrease due to the gains rebel forces are making in Libya, which may raise hope that the country could resume oil shipments in the near future. Before the conflict, the country was responsible for exporting more than 1 million barrels per day.

Safety managers may wish to enroll their operators in online truck driving regulation training to educate them on the best methods for conserving fuel during this trying time.
