Could ice trucking be in jeopardy because of warm climates?

Created: Tuesday, May 31st, 2011 04:01 pm

Ice road truckers may find that there are not as many jobs available to them in the coming years, as global warming could have an effect on ice highways.

The Globe and Mail is reporting that new research suggests that ice roads could melt away because of the warmer climates, which could cause more companies to ship goods rather than use trucks due to the possible danger.

"This is a transportation system that is going to be profoundly affected by a warming climate in an adverse direction," Scott Stephenson, a physical geographer and PhD student, who is the study’s lead author, told the news provider.

However, the researchers were quick to point out that it should not be a major problem for the ice road trucking industry for years to come.

Red Orbit reports that while fleet managers could suffer from this problem in the long haul, it could be good news for those with global shipping interests, as people will have to look for new means of delivering goods.
