Connecticut shows concern over out-of-state truckers

Some truckers and other professionals in the trucking industry in Connecticut are concerned about jobs being out-sourced to other states. For example, town government officials contracted companies from Florida and Texas to do cleanup work after recent fall storms, reports The Hartford Courant. Some say they are worried that these other businesses are not adhering to state rules and the jobs also could have been filled by state residents looking for work.

Michael J. Riley, president of the Motor Transportation Association of Connecticut, appealed to the governor and local government officials to protect truckers and all motorists safety in state.

"Connecticut companies are diligent in their efforts to meet the rigorous requirements of state trucking laws as well as the Federal Motor Carrier Regulations," Riley told the news source. "As you know, these regulations require drug and alcohol testing of truck drivers, medical examinations, certain license and registration requirements, as well as vehicle markings, inspection and repair, and fuel tax and registration payments."

In response, officials from the Department of Motor Vehicles assured truck drivers and the public that the out-of-state drivers would be held to the same standards when it comes to rules and regulations.
