Commercial trucking industry could get boost from equipment orders

Created: Friday, May 6th, 2011 05:01 pm

Proving that the trucking industry is continuing to grow following a tough economy, analysts are noting that companies are continuing to order equipment, causing freight demand to exceed its capacity.

Fleet Owner reports that net orders for class 8 trucks and other commercial trailers keep on increasing as a result of the high amount of equipment orders. However, this is a good sign for the freight sector, as it will allow companies to make enough cash to replace their old parts.

"The commercial trucking fleet is ancient, as carriers went several years - four in the case of trailers - without replacing their equipment," Kenny Vieth, president and senior analyst with ACT Research Company, told the news provider. "This frenzy we're seeing in orders also reflects that carriers now have the necessary cash to buy equipment."

The source reports that the net orders for heavy-duty class 8 trucks increased by 158 percent from 2010, as April saw 38,200 units ordered, the highest intake since March 2006.

Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that there was an increase in manufacturing jobs, which could mean big things for the trucking sector. Individuals who want to be a part of this growing field may wish to consider fleet management training.
