Civil unrest in Libya may affect American trucking industry

Fuel prices have long been associated with the trucking industry with regards to how it will grow or retract. An increased concern over the civil unrest in Libya may impact oil prices and the bottom line for many freight transportation companies.

Although freight volumes increased in January, experts are now predicting that the rising oil prices will negatively impact the industry, Fleet Owner reports.

Officials from the American Trucking Associations told the media outlet that for-hire truck tonnage index increased by 3.8 percent in January, compared to the 2.5 percent recorded in December. They added that the rising oil prices, which recently climbed to more than $100 a barrel, are becoming worrisome for the trucking industry and the U.S. economy.

"This issue [of higher oil prices] is of importance for its indirect effects. Should the hikes be sustained, it could kill the [economic] upturn," Noel Perry, senior consultant for FTR Associates, told the news source.

Online truck driver training courses may help operators keep up with the latest trends that affect their industry. Furthermore, these classes may help drivers determine the best methods for conserving fuel, which can cut costs for both them and the company.
