Created: Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 05:01 am

Officials from Fremont, California recently announced a proposal that would ban commercial trucks on Niles Canyon Road near Interstate 680, The Oakland Tribune reports.

The proposal is aimed at banning trucks from using the popular roadway in an effort to improve safety. Furthermore, officials told the news provider that this will also help restore the beauty of the state-designated scenic route.

The city recently approved funding for a $30,000 study to ban trucks on the roadway. Tractor-trailers account for 2.5 percent of the road's traffic and is involved in 38 percent of the collisions.

The proposal also touches on improving the condition of the road as a whole. Meanwhile, work is currently being performed to widening the highway in order to allow room for cyclists. Furthermore, many trees are being cut down to help promote safety in blind corners.

Safety directors whose fleets travel across the U.S. may want to consider enrolling their employees in online truck driver safety training courses. These classes are designed to help improve a driver's ability to operate their vehicle on tough road conditions.
