Chicago launches incentive program to convert fleets to electric power
The U.S. Department of Transportation recently gave $15 million to the City of Chicago to create an incentive program that may convince trucking companies to convert their fleets from diesel gas to electric power, according to NBC News.
"The first-of-its-kind incentive program will make Chicago the leader in building a robust public and private electric truck fleet and dramatically increase the number of these trucks on Chicago's streets, allowing more companies to operate more efficiently and creating economic opportunity in the process," Rahm Emanuel, mayor of Chicago, told NBC News.
Sustainability and business goals are important to individuals who hold truck driving jobs, fleet managers and city officials alike. The Chicago Department of Transportation is optimistic that offering a voucher at the time of sale rather than a post-sale rebate will entice more carriers to get involved in the program. The mayor's office expects to issue approximately 250 of these vouchers.
Fleets headquartered in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties will be able to participate in the incentive program, which will include a voucher for 60 percent of the incremental electric vehicle costs.
